Dan

The following morning, around 10am, after a hectic night at Harties, Dan Mfeze woke up and tried to call his wife but she didn’t respond, cleaned himself up and was glad for the anti-hangover medication he had taken beforehand.

He joined his friends for a lazy swim and recap of the night, all collected their cellphones from Lukes who had ensured that no one could post on Facebook or Instagram, before getting into the luxurious Vito they had driven up in. The drive back to Joburg was filled with lots of laughter as always, with all of them feeling happy with the turn up and already planning how to make the other guys who had not been invited feel small and insignificant. This was the norm in the group – almost like the old game of middle aged rural men when they compared their many cows with each other out in the fields.

At around 12.30pm the minibus dropped off Dan in Midrand, and he got home and quickly prepared for his day with his wife.

He checked at his messages briefly, saw the calls from Rhee and Kazi, and decided to respond to them on his drive to Sandton. There was no call from his wife but he knew he would call her on his way. It irked him that she never checked up on him because he had no idea where she was and what she was up to. Also, he was used to women checking up on him. Having a woman do this was a clear sign that you had them hooked. But he knew he would fix that in time. There was other missed calls from unknown numbers but he would listen to those later.

As he got on to Grayston Road driving towards Sandton, Dan dialed Kazi.

A teary Kazi answered the phone and mumbled something about “abortion, arrogance, self-absorption and unfairness”, before Dan calmly spat out “Awu Kazi! Call me when you’re feeling a bit more sensible! Killing my child – what did you expect? Now you’ve killed two.” He dropped her call.

Dan was more determined to finish off with all the extra women in his life and had no time to process Kazi’s news. He called Rhee and was prepared for more drama. He had hoped that someone had whispered into Rhee’s ear that Dan was now married, meaning that she should have started making plans for herself. He needed her to move out of the townhouse as he could not afford two households.

As he slowly made his way up Grayston, he listened to Rhee mumbling some story about her trying to confront the woman he was cheating with in Sandton City and how the woman shook her off, turning her attention to her ringing phone. Rhee had apparently turned away and stormed off, humiliated and mortified by what she had tried to do. She started apologizing to Dan.

Dan dropped the call and immediately called Palesa. His mind was racing. He had to devise a plan to neutralize whatever Rhee had done.
